menstrual cycle on performances. We are
still in the initial stage. So far, there have
been very few studies on this topic, which
has never been taken into consideration
in women's sport. It has never even been
mentioned, apart from a few coaches who
joke about it. Sometimes, during training,
you get some sarcastic and discriminatory:
" What's your problem? Is it your time of the
month? " while it should be better to really
think about the impact on performances.
You also protested against police
violence after George Floyd's death.
What was the general feeling in
the USA after Derek Chauvin, the
police officer who killed him, was
sentenced to prison?
There was a feeling of justice, some sort of
initial euphoria because justice had been
made. Then, things got more rational
because it was just normal. Any police
officer who commits such a crime, with
pictures to back it up, should be deemed
guilty. There is still a long way to go.

Last year, you started Essentielle
Stories, an Instagram media. What
is it about?
The idea was to talk about something I do
care about, i.e., gender equality. Sport is a
men's world mostly. As a woman, I can see
the inequalities in terms of visibility and
exposure, and I wanted to talk about it. It
started doing live chats with other female
athletes during lockdown, like Olympic
boxing champion Estelle Mossely or tennis
player Kristina Mladenovic. The problem
was that live chats are not permanent, so
I thought launching a media per se was a
better idea. I would like to create a whole
platform; I have been thinking about
potential contents and formats. I have even
hired a graphist for the identity branding
and artistic direction.
In which subjects are gender
inequalities the most striking in
sport?
Pretty much every subject. Media-wise, the
differences are striking. Same thing when it
comes to the organisation of competitions.
There is more money in men's sports. Male
athlete's performances are more highlighted.
It is important to deconstruct this mentality.
There are also more men than women in the
organisations and federations. For instance,
I have only had male coaches as an athlete.
Medical positions are mainly male too. In
such an environment, it is hard to convey
ideas and deal with the specificities of
women's sport.
In the USA, where you've lived
for several years, is women's sport
regarded with more respect?
Women's sport is more developed, and it is
easier to debate on topics that are specific
to women's sport. Media coverage is better,
too, because sport is very business oriented.
The brands have understood it is a good
thing to invest in women's sport.
The impact menstrual cycles have
on performances remains a taboo
in women's sport.
It does, yes. This is why I recently got
involved in studies on the impact of the
