Emmanuel TENIERE (MS 93)
Deputy Director of Bolloré Railways
Emmanuel TENIERE (MS 93) is currently Deputy Director of Bolloré Railways. He
has been with the Bolloré Group since 1997, where he has held various positions
entailing major responsibility. In this interview, he looks back over his career,
and talks about the opportunities that this international player can offer young
graduates.
You have spent most of your career
with the Bolloré Group. What are
the main positions you have held?
Directly after school, in 1993, I started
my professional life working for the
Italcementi Group in the Czech Republic.
For more than a year, I worked as
financial cont rol ler for two cement
plants. Returning to France, I worked
as an external auditor in the banking
and insurance division of KPMG. It was
four years after leaving school, in 1997,
that I began my career with the Bolloré
Group, initially as an auditor in charge of
the financial control of subsidiaries. This
first experience at the holding company
level allowed me to understand the
characteristics of the group's various
businesses, and the existing and potential
synergies.
Two years later, I took over the financial
management of SAGA AIR, an entity
specialized in air
freight
forwarding
and logistics. For almost seven years,
among other things, I worked on the
restructuring of small subsidiaries, which
were subsequently developed in the
United States, Belgium, South Korea
and China. During this period, my scope
of action also expanded to cover the
management of SAGATRANS' activities
(maritime transport in France and in
the French overseas departments and
territories) and I participated in the
merger of SAGA AIR with SAGATRANS.
In 2011, I moved to India to take over as
Group Finance Director for South Asia.
This was my first expatriate experience
wi th the Bol loré Group. It was an
enriching and fulfilling time, during which
I discovered a new culture and was able
to develop my capacity to understand
and adapt to a tot al ly new, foreign
environment.
In 2015,
I returned to the head office
in Puteaux as part of my appointment
as Deputy Finance Director for Africa.
During the first 12 months, I gained a
deeper understanding of our activities
on t he cont inent
( business
l ines ,
investment projects, etc.) where the
group is established in 48 countries.
I
then became Deputy Director of Bolloré
Rai lways where, in addi t ion to the
financial side, I contributed to the dayto-day
management of the concession
agreements for three rail networks:
CAMRAIL (Cameroon), SITARAIL (Côte
d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso) and BÉNIRAIL
(Benin and Niger). This experience on the
African continent gave me a closer look
at the public-private partnership (PPP)
model, and also the extent of the railway
