pregnated with thermosetting polymeric binders has several advantages,
such as corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, low thermal conductivity and environmental friendliness. However, until recently, it was
still just a promising, unconventional material and was not widely used
because reinforcing fibre and resin were expensive, and the legal framework was not yet in place. The situation has changed over the last ten
years, and in addition to its physical and engineering advantages, composite rebar is becoming economically attractive.
To make polymeric composite rebar with a diameter of 5 mm,
PolyCompozite added 0.05% TUBALL nanotubes using the TUBALL™
MATRIX concentrate. The resulting sample was tested and compared
to the reference sample. The first tests showed a 32% increase in tensile
strength and 29% in bending strength. Konstantin Gusev, Head of the

Technology and Quality Department of Poly Composite, commented,
"In the long run, such an improvement in properties will increase the bearing
capacity of structures, offer opportunities to reduce the area of rebar, and allow
for real-time monitoring of the protective layer in concrete and at the rebar
location."
The manufacturer intends to continue working on improving key indicators (including the modulus of elasticity) using nanotubes.
A milestone in the glass fibre industry
SWCNTs are unparalleled in terms of physical and chemical features.
When added to the matrix of a material, nanotubes can impart their
unique properties to that material.
