A new companion Vanishing Runner
Technology (VRT) can be formed as
an integral part of the SWORL reusable
vacuum bag to further optimize resin
flow rates. Together, the new media consolidate the components of the bagging
system into a single unit for easy removal and subsequent reuse. The complete
SWORL system eliminates the need for peel ply, spiral wrap and other
costly materials previously consumed each time a part is infused. The advanced silicone chemistries used in the reusable vacuum bags produce
ultra-high strength bags with world-leading tear strength at a thickness of
3mm without the need for fabric reinforcement. The bags are formulated
to include top-layer bonding technology.

Smart Caul reusable tooling solutions

Smart Tooling provides formable, reusable tooling Hall 6 - B40
solutions for manufacturing composite parts with
complex and trapped geometries that reduce labour hours, increase
throughput, reduce consumables, and improve quality.
The new Smart Cauls are made in the net geometry of the composite
part minus composite thickness and can be made in 360°
or profile shapes. The composite material can be placed directly on the rigid Smart Caul after adding mould release
or a release film. During cure, the Profile Smart Cauls and
Smart Caul Bladders become elastomeric and translate
pressure onto the composite part surface to improve part
quality. While still elastomeric, 360° Smart Cauls are easily removed from the cured composite part and can be
reformed and re-used to make the next composite part.
Profile Smart Cauls can be removed from cured composite
parts at room temperature after relieving tension between
the cured composite and the Smart Caul. The Smart Caul
mandrels remain rigid during cure and are perfect for twostage composite cures. During the initial composite cure,
the mandrel sets the inner mould line geometry of the composite part. As
the composite part is being elevated to a post-cure temperature, the now
elastic mandrel can easily be removed from the cured composite part. Using
two Smart Cauls can significantly increase throughput, as one of them can
be curing while the other is having composite material applied for the next
cure.

C. A. Litzler has announced their improved standard thermoplastic prepreg line. The line is available in solvent and
water-based versions for various widths and fibres, and
can be used for multiple resins/systems. Thermoplastics
are an exciting new prospect as the demand for lower cost prepregs increases in the composites industry, specifically the automotive and aerospace markets.

Benefits of the Litzler line include: highly accurate metering
systems, closed-loop tension control, tow sizing removal systems, flexibility for multiple widths and specialized engineered
resin wet-out systems. In addition to the standard components, the thermoplastic prepreg line features attributes such
as fibre saturation and impregnation (stainless steel, recirculating slurry dip tanks, mixing and distribution manifolds,
submerged rollers encourage wetting), water/solvent removal
and resin pre-heating (infrared ovens are used because they do
not disturb the resin distribution) and heated die (precision
machined to maintain/improve resin distribution, uniform
temperature distribution across and along the web for uniform
penetration and wetting).

Stoner Inc. has developed an innovative water-based
mould release agent called Honey Wax Hydro Speed.
Hydro Speed was created by taking the Honey Wax
paste formula, removing the hydrocarbon solvents and
replacing them with water, resulting in a non-flammable,
0-VOC, high-wax-solids liquid mould release agent.

Innovative advances in infusion processing enhancements for
SWORL reusable vacuum bags that improve resin fill rate to cut
production time and costs will be introduced at JEC World 2018.
As fabricators continually seek to optimize efficiency and reduce
waste, the interest in reusable vacuum bags and associated materials for
resin infusion continues to grow. In response to this trend, SWORL is announcing two new reusable processing
aids. SPLAT is an eight-channel resin
distribution product that improves resin
flow rates into dry laminate plies.

The advantages of Honey Wax Hydro Speed over traditional premium paste wax release agents include a more environmentally-friendly product that can be shipped as
non-dangerous. Furthermore,
it can be applied with low-cost
spray systems that can reduce
application and removal times
by up to 80%. Target markets
include marine fabricators,
epoxy pipe and fittings fabricators, and any large open
moulding composite tool
where the fabricator uses
paste wax versus a semi-permanent release agent.
