ComposiTIC: a high-tech regional structure open to small and medium-sized businesses
Where do you get your resources? Is the
model sustainable?

Y. G.: Currently, 50% of our resources consist of collaborative projects
(Europe, the French Environment and
Energy Management Agency ADEME,
FUI interministerial or regional funds),
40% consist of direct services to
companies (paid services and making
technical resources available, co-investments), and 10%, of subsidies for missions of general interest. The model for
the technology platform offers financial
visibility up to four years, with potential
sustainability. However, it is difficult to
make predictions over the longer term.
How would you assess the initial years
of operation?

Y. G.: This may be a cliché, but we

need above all to emphasize the motivation and dedication of the women and
men involved in the project. The human
adventure remains the main driver
of innovation. A reactive response to
industrial demands and the capacity
to anticipate technological innovation
trends in the field are the advantages
of a small transfer structure, compared
to larger ones. Also, a well-understood
complementarity along with the regional industrial skills should establish
confidence and respect among the
innovation actors.

Are you considering adapting or
changing anything with respect to the
initial brief?

Y. G.: We would like to interact more
and more closely with everyone involved in additive technology. Daily exchange is essential to get straight to the
point and roll out these technologies
in new industrial fields. Geographical
proximity and remote communication
tools like conference calls, video, immersive rooms and shared documents
help us a lot.
What resources do you have? Have you
programmed any new investments to
meet demand?

What are ComposiTIC's next challenges
over the medium term?

Y. G.: First, we have to stabilize our

human resources by means of adequate
statutes within our structure. Staying in
the lead in the race to automation of the
composite design/materials/automated-manufacturing chain is an absolute
obligation. The competition is stiff and
motivating in this global acceleration
of innovation - you get a good sense of
that, year after year at the JEC shows.

Y. G.: We are co-investing with
industrial partners in new automated
manufacturing systems, and two new
additive manufacturing robots for
composites will be installed on-site by
year's end 2017.
Do you target any particular sectors,
applications, geographical area, or
small/medium-sized/micro businesses?

Y. G.: Some markets that are target-

ed represent significant challenges,
because while the first client was
aerospace, the automotive and yachting
sectors are becoming more frequent
users of our services. The type of
