LM Wind Power lays first stone at Cherbourg blade factory
LM Wind Power, a manufacturer of wind turbine blades, announced that work on its new
factory in Cherbourg, Normandy, has commenced. This was marked on March 23 with a
foundation stone ceremony at the construction site, chaired by French Prime Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, in the presence of industry and representatives from the local partners, including Normandy region, the Manche Department, the local community of Cherbourg and
the port authority, Ports Normands Associés (PNA). The company brings an initial investment of more than €100 million to the development of the Cherbourg site, which is expected
to grow to a capacity of between 1.2 and 2.0 gigawatts (GW). The ramp-up to production
of blades destined for European offshore wind farms is expected during 2018. The company
aims to begin hiring and training after the summer, targeting a workforce of more than 550
people at the facility once the first production lines are in place.

The training will start in a new Centre of Excellence, to provide the skills
needed for a new, strategically important green business. The plant is scaled
for future growth and is already in the
initial phase. It is expected to generate
2,000 further indirect jobs in the local

TPI Composites agreements with Gamesa and Vestas Wind Systems
The US-based independent manufacturer of composite wind
blades announced last March that it has entered into a long-term
agreement with Gamesa to supply wind blades from its new manufacturing facility in Izmir, Turkey through 2022. TPI expects
to commence manufacturing for Gamesa from one line in early
2018, with the second line under an option agreement through
September 30, 2017. The company has also signed a multiyear
supply agreement with Vestas Wind Systems A/S to provide
blades from two manufacturing lines (with option to add more
lines) for the V136 wind turbine for markets in Central and South
America.
The blades will be produced at a new facility in Matamoros, Mexico, which is scheduled to open for production in the first half of
2018. TPI's new manufacturing hub will be designed to be stateof-the-art and able to reliably and cost-effectively serve wind markets in Mexico, Central and South America via land, rail and by
water from the port of Brownsville, Texas. The facility, located on
a 13-hectare site, will initially have a surface area of 48,000 m2,
with the ability to expand and serve multiple customers.
