* A6m: fatigue
limit for 106 cycles
- From 1 to around 30,000 cycles, there was
a significant effect of fatigue, characterized
by a strong slope;
- From 30,000 to 107 cycles, the slope was
low and similar to thermoset applications.
This was extrapolated up to 109 cycles.
FEM analysis was used for the sizing step,
considering an equivalent material (orthotropic) based on technological coupons
and analysis. Critical areas were determined
in terms of ILSS and fibre failure.
The FEM analysis was validated by a test
characterization based on extensive strain
gauge equipment under single loads and
different load combinations.
For the most loaded area, the strain difference between the test and the computation
was 3%. In the other areas, the maximum
difference was 13%.

Certification process
The certification process was based on:
- FEM stress analysis to define the critical
areas;
- -Static substantiation (CS 29: §303 305
307 613) to validate the limit and ultimate
strength;
- Damage tolerance and fatigue evaluation
- (CS29 §573) to define the hub service life
limit and inspection intervals.

A building block test approach was
retained (Figure 24) and the implementation is in process. The goal is to gain an
extensive knowledge of the fatigue and
static behavior.

- Manufacturing variations.
Some results available today
Damage tolerance impact
The PEEK-carbon results were compared
to four different thermoset carbon composites (UD and fabrics) after impact. For this
purpose, compression after impact (CAI)
tests were performed on standard coupons
previously impacted up to 25 joules. AH
demonstrated that 25 joules is the maximum realistic energy level for mechanical
components [2].
Figure 25 shows the typical profile of a
4-mm-thick impacted sample: delaminations and fibre failures can be seen on the
rear face of the thermoset material.

However, a significant difference was highlighted: the static failure under compression
(CAI) after 25 joules is higher for PEEKcarbon than for the 4 thermoset cases (Figure
26).
This result underlines the good behaviour
of this resin type. This could be linked to
what is mentioned in the literature, namely
the high K1c value of carbon-PEEK in
comparison with a carbon-thermoset resin
