Development of a composite tank
for corrosive liquid transportation
The advantages of composites in transportation are not limited to weight
savings for individual cars. Indeed, composite materials offer excellent chemical
and corrosion resistance compared to metallic solutions, opening up innovative
solutions and uses.

Willig Carbon GmbH,
together with Omni
Tanker Pty Ltd. (Australia)
and Kurt Willig GmbH & Co.
KG (Germany), developed the
Carbon Mini Tank. Carbon
Mini Tanks are specialised
dangerous goods tanks designed
for the transportation of highly
corrosive chemicals in Europe.
These tanks are mounted on
road trucks or trailers along
with a specialised dangerous
goods fit-out, and used as road
transport tankers.
The first units are now in
service, comprising a rigid
truck with three separate 4,000
litre Carbon Mini Tanks, and
a dog trailer with two 4,000
litre Carbon Mini Tanks, for
a combined total of 20,000
litres across the truck and trailer
chemical tanker.

The weight of each tank is
approximately 430 kg, and
the mounting equipment for
each tank is approximately 250
kg, yielding a total weight of
680 kg per 4,000 litre tank. In

comparison, the nearest market
competitor tank weighs 930
kg per 3,200 litre tank. This
equates to a weight saving of
approximately 40% per litre
of fluid. The most commonly
understood benefit of a tank's
low weight is the reduced fuel
consumption per litre of payload transported, leading to fuel
savings and reduced emissions
associated with transport. The
