structures. Among these, local retrofitting
of the structure can be used to treat a type
of component that would probably fail and
lead to overall damage. It is also possible to
treat the structure as a whole, but this would
require costly large-scale work that would
need to be validated both technically and
economically.
FRPs not only make it possible to improve
the overall strength of structural components, but also to substantially improve their
ductility. Eurocode 8 part 3 describes several
design methods for this type of bonded composite reinforcement, mainly with respect
to shear. The present document provides a
summary of these methods while making
suggestions to improve and adapt several
equations. The aim of this document is to
provide in-depth information on the use of
FRPs for the seismic retrofitting of existing
structures. These guidelines are a complement to existing guidelines on earthquake
engineering.

Conclusion
Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have been
used to retrofit reinforced concrete structures
since the 1990s in order to compensate for
the flexure, shear and compression deficiencies of this type of construction. Now that
the effectiveness of these materials has been
largely demonstrated, they have become the
subject of numerous international regulations and are widely used in France.
Due to the development of regulations
aimed at achieving acceptable seismic performance and ensuring that the designed
structure can withstand minor earthquakes
without damage, moderate earthquakes with
minor non-structural damage and major
earthquakes without collapsing, retrofitting
strategies need to be developed for existing

In particular, a number of case studies are
presented in which FRPs are used for the
seismic retrofitting of columns and beams in
buildings and civil engineering works.
A workshop was organized in Lyon,
France, in September 2016 to present the
guidelines. These two days, organized by
INDURA and AFGC, aimed to take stock
of the different field applications and share
advanced research. The AFGC guide was
presented on this occasion. 86 researchers
and engineers participated in the workshop. The keynote speakers were Thanasis
Triantafillou (University of Patras), Alper
Ilki (Structural and Earthquake Engineering
Laboratory, Istanbul Technical University),
Mark Yashinsky (California Department
of Transportation, Caltrans), and Maurizio
Guadagnini (University of Sheffield). 22
additional speakers presented their work; all
the presentations are available on YouTube
