Nobel prize-winner Andre Geim sets up
a graphene company in China
Together with two Chinese tech companies, graphene pioneer
Andre Geim created a new company aiming at developing
new types of graphene composites. The deal takes place
as exchanges intensify between Western organizations and
graphene-focused China.

he International Graphene
Innovation Conference
took place on September
22-24 in Qingdao, a major city
of China's eastern province
Shandong. The event gathered
more than 2,000 graphene
specialists, including graphene
pioneer and Nobel prizewinner Andre Geim. The
University of Manchester
scientist took the opportunity
to present the new company
Qingdao DeAn New Carbon
Composites Ltd., in which
he co-invested with two local
companies, DT Nanotech
and Qingdao Nanshu Zichan
Yunying Ltd.

Qingdao Dean New Carbon
Composites Ltd. is a tech company engaged in the manufacturing of new types of
graphene composites, with a
registered capital of RMB70
million. Located in the Laixi
district of Qingdao (known
to be the hometown of graphite) on a 6,000m2 site, the new
company will be put in operation mid-2017.

Spread the use
of graphene composites
At the present stage, the company aims at excelling in the
manufacture of graphene composites and the development
of applications. The targeted
markets include new-energy
cars, yachting, aerospace and

aviation. Meanwhile, the company will promote the use of
graphene composites in these
industries as well as in LED
lighting systems.

Among the conference participants was also Tang Yilin, president of the Jinan Shengquan
Group, similarly situated in the
Shandong province. The company has just won an award
from the Italian Institute of
Science and Technology for its
"Graphene Warm Fibre Inside"
innovation. This was the first
time Italy selected a Chinese
company for a national-level
science and technology award.
Simultaneously, graphene scientist Konstantin Novoselov,
co-recipient of the Nobel
Prize, gave a speech at the
2016 Pujiang Innovation
Forum, which took place near
Shanghai on September 23-26.

China is a late starter in
graphene research, but has
achieved some results driven by favourable policies.
Through the setup of the
China Innovation Alliance of
the Graphene Industry, five
graphene industrial parks
(Changzhou, Wuxi, Ningbo,
Qingdao, and Chongqing)
have been established to accelerate the industrialization of
graphene.

After a presentation of the
graphene background, as
well as the progress of SinoBritish research on new materials, he stated that technology was flowing not just from

China is the country with the
most graphene patents in the
world, having cumulatively applied for 7,900 patents by the
end of March 2015, according
to a report provided by Research
in China. It is expected that the
Chinese graphene market will
preliminarily take shape in 2018
with a market value of around
RMB200 million.
