The main production process is hand lay-up, with this
technique representing 42% in
2014 (see Figure 3), but other
processes continue to grow such
as filament winding or pultrusion. The number of filament
winding machines has increased
five-fold in five years to reach
just over 100 machines. The
number of pultrusion machines
has quadrupled over the same
period to reach approximately
160 machines.

The six largest sectors that use
composites in India are transportation, building & construction,
electrical and electronic equipment, infrastructure, chemicals/
corrosion and wind energy
with respectively: 19, 15, 14,
13, 13 and 12% (see Figure 4).
Thermoplastic compounds only
represent 11% of the composites
market in India.
Note that despite being ranked
fifth in the world, the Indian
wind energy sector has suffered
from a lack of state investment.
While there is the potential to
produce 102 GW, only a total
capacity of 21,141 MW was
operational in 2014. A recent
policy shift may improve things.
The future of the Indian
market
Even if it is still not clearly visible, the potential for growth
in composites in India is huge,
reflected by the country's
needs in infrastructure, water
treatment systems (drainage,
treatment and desalination) and
energy production. The agricultural and marine sectors are also
interested. Finally, the Indian
government would like that all
aerospace & defence equipment
have 30% of its components
produced locally.
The Chinese market
With China, it's a completely
different scale: according to
the China Fiberglass Industry
Association (CFIA) and the
China Composites Industry
Association (CCIA), the
