In a world where energy savings and
recyclability are sought, composites
seem to stand out as one of the best
solutions. So we are going to see a flourishing sector represented at the 2015
JEC Paris trade show, with appreciable
growth worldwide and participation
from all over the globe.
North America and Europe are what
could be called mature innovative zones,
for the entire value chain (raw materials,
processing, plant and equipment,
finished products). And the emerging
countries are stepping up their use of
composites. Asia takes the lion's share,
accounting for fully half of global
production in volume. In terms of value,
production is distributed relatively
evenly among the world's major regions:
in a global market worth 61.21 billion
euros, the Asia-Pacific Rim region
accounts for 43%, North America for
32%, the EMEA region for 20%, and the
Southern region (Latina America, Africa
and the rest) for 5%.
The composite industry is an innovative
one. Automotive, aerospace, railway,
boatbuilding, building and construction,
industry, electricity/electronics,
sports and leisure: every one of these
sectors is harnessing the properties and
performance of composite materials
more and more.
Companies are also making great strides
in areas like raw-material formulation,
software services (CAD, CAD/CAM,

simulation), automated manufacturing,
equipment and machine design, and
finished products (trains, automobiles,
aircraft, yachts, construction assemblies
and sub-assemblies). Our industry has a
number of decades' worth of confirmed
expertise in a broad range of aerospace,
marine, and ground applications,
both civil and military (e.g. airplanes,
helicopters, ships, submarines, missiles,
armoured vehicles, ballistic protection).
These fields that use composite
materials, especially high-performance
composites, are great innovation drivers.
New markets include sectors like
construction (insulation, heat regulation,
acoustics, comfort), energy (wind
energy, PV solar, storage) and biosourced
materials.
We are also entering a new dimension
with automated mass production: a
number of sectors, including automotive,
are volume markets that require
manufacturing in large series. A mark of
this evolution is automotive's high-profile
presence this year.
The trade show is so successful that
we have had to open a third level this
year. Engineers have fertile imaginations,
and user specifications are always
more demanding. This is how we keep
pushing the envelope of possibilities,
and how in future we will see the rise
of new applications that we can't even
imagine today.
