It is also interesting to compare the
weight of a classical prepreg sparcap
solution with the new solution. The
advantages brought by Carboglulam® –
high compressive properties and stable
industrial process – result in a 40%
lighter sparcap. The difference directly
impacts the amount of product to be
used in the wind blade and the overall
cost.

sheets provided by prepreg and fabric
suppliers are generally based on a very
precise thread-by-thread construction in
a laboratory, which is very far from real
conditions. This results in a very high
difference between full-scale and laboratory values. On the contrary, Carboglulam® laboratory values are exactly the
same as the full-scale values since the
process used to make a sample is exactly
the same as to make a real part.
Results
Epsilon Composite’s laminate reaches
a 1,650 MPa compressive strength and
1.8% compressive elongation, exceeding
1.8 times the prepreg’s final values and
3 times the fabric’s final value. Furthermore, the fact that the same values are
considered for laboratory and full-scale
production facilitates design and ensures
a higher reliability of the final product.
Main benefits
This solution results in an industrial
process that is quicker, cleaner, efficient
and reproducible regardless of the final
production place. Moreover, higher
compressive performance is ensured in
the final structure. Finally, the thinner,
lighter sparcaps allow cost reductions
in the sparcap, the blade and the wind
turbine itself. n

The diagram in figure 3 shows that:
- 1st bar: The major advantage is a benefit
of around 1.8 times the sparcap compressive strain as shown in previous
diagrams.
- 2nd bar: The higher modulus (135 GPa
compared with 115 GPa for the prepreg)
also makes it possible to reduce thickness and weight while making a second
blade design iteration.
- 3rd bar: Epsilon Composite’s safety factor can be reduced as a fully polymerized
product brings higher guaranteed values
in the sparcap.
- 4th bar: Finally, as composite quality
is not impacted by manual labour, the
construction’s standard deviation is
highly reduced.
- 5th bar: On the contrary, the use of an
additional product to stack the laminates
in the Carboglulam® sparcap was considered, for instance bonding films.
