Washington State’s Composite Cluster the future is here
Washington State has developed into a global leader in the advanced composite materials industry. Situated amongst the mountains and rivers of the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Washington State has the world’s largest coordinate hydro-electric system that generates over 14,000 MW of clean, renewable energy per year. This energy powers the production of carbon fiber material and other energy intensive processes. ElectroImpact
Electroimpact provides automation and tooling exclusively to Aerospace including to all major aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers with a staff of over 450 professionals, including 350 degreed engineers based in Washington State near Seattle. Electroimpact provides worldwide support, with offices in Australia, and the UK. All systems are engineered, built, tested, installed and supported by Electroimpact engineers. Systems range from small, flexible CNC drilling systems used on wings and fuselages, to complete structural wing box assembly tooling and automation for A380 and A350. By gathering all the critical players, cross-pollinating with incentives and industrial programs the state is “breeding” a new way of doing business that will result in sustained economic growth. This approach relies heavily on advancing industrial/college/university training programs, as well as having incentives for technology R&D that leads to highly advanced manufacturing capabilities with the correct mix of human and machine automation. Our composites industry is diverse and integrated, with major players specializing in all aspects o f production and design, including R&D, non-destructive testing, structural and non-structural uses of composites, and tooling. Aggregate gross business revenue for Washington’s composite companies increased by over 11% from 2009 to 2010, from $2.98 billion to $3.32 billion*. Immediate opportunities exist in a number of large markets: aerospace,

transportation, wind energy, ocean energy, military (defense applications, veterans’ rehabilitation and quality of life), medical, recreational goods, and recycled high-value materials. Like Boeing with aerospace, Microsoft with information technology, Amazon.com with retailing and Starbucks with coffee, Washington’s companies are once again changing the way the world lives. *Figures do not include revenue numbers from Boeing and SGL.
