A new generation of fire-resistant composites

High mechanical properties and unique fire resistance are the key characteristics ensuring that basalt fibres are more and more used in a world with increasingly strict fire regulations. The fact that basalt fibres retain their integrity at elevated temperatures is a major asset. By combining this fibre with a resin that doesn’t compromise on the fire behaviour, a unique combination has been found. At the JEC 2012, Basaltex will present new solutions based on basalt fibres that have been developed together with partners. These solutions combine fire resistance with high mechanical performance. TenCate TC275 and > Booth R46 TC350-1 out of autoclave prepregs

TenCate has two new epoxy-based out of autoclave processible prepregs. TC275 provides excellent inspectibility, excellent resistance to moisture, and can be fully cured after six hours at 275F/135C. TC350-1 is a toughened epoxy, that features good toughness, a 30+ day outtime and may be cured at 275F/135C with a required free standing postcure at 350F/177C for one hour for full mechanical properties. Powder coating of non-conductive materials

InnoVoc Solutions technology enables the powder coating of plastics, composites and other non-conductive, non-metallic substrates by using a low-cost surface treatment that emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other hazardous by-products. The surface treatment makes the substrates temporarily conductive. Once the powder flows and cures, the part is no longer conductive. PMC-Baycomp is introducing new continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRT) uni-direction (UD) tape and sheet materials for various markets and applications. The materials include: 1. PC-ABS with Carbon and Glass fibers for applications in the 3C industry. The materials are competitive with Mg, AL and thermoset composites and can be molded in rapid cycle times. They can be over-molded with common thermoplastic resins for a high level of design detail in structural components. 2. PA6 with Glass fiber tape is targeted for structural applications in the Automotive market. These materials may be over-molded to produce complex hybrid structures. 3. TPU with Carbon for recreation applications. These materials impart good mechanical properties, high toughness and fatigue resistance as well as affinity to urethane adhesive systems. 4. HDPE with Glass for Ballistic applications. The material has 80% fiber content and can be co-molded with UHMWPE.
