Protechnic designs, produces and distributes thermoadhesive webs, nets and films in roll form for dry lamination. The complexity of the polymers used, such as copolyamide, copolyester, polyolefin or polyurethane, provides customized solutions to meet the needs of customers in a wide range of industries. In 2011, Protechnic developed a new production line for highwidth thermoadhesive webs (up to 2200 mm). With this line, the company will access new technical textile markets such as high-width non-wovens and foams. It can also process a wider range of PO and PU polymers. ForMi is a new cellulose fibre-based biocomposite developed by UPM, a company that integrates the bio and forest industries. ForMi was developed for moulding applications. It combines the strength, renewability and consistent quality of cellulose fibres with high-quality polymers, resulting in products with improved mechanical properties, high quality and good availability. ForMi granulates offer smooth and reliable processing. Due to the high purity and constant quality of the cellulose raw material, the resulting composite products are clean and odourless. The patent-pending production process provides good fibre dispersion and light colours even with high cellulose fibre content. All cellulose fibres used in ForMi are produced by UPM. The use of sustainable and renewable forest biomass, an efficient supply chain and the considerable share of bioenergy used in UPM’s production processes ensure a low carbon footprint for granulates. ForMi is available in several grades for injection moulding and extrusion. Most are based on a polypropylene matrix, but other polymers are also developed and available. ForMi products are designed for both industrial and consumer end-use applications.

Cellulose fibre-reinforced composite

Curv self-reinforced composite is a new concept in thermoplastic materials that bridges the gap between commodity plastics and traditional fibre-reinforced materials. It is referred to as being “self-reinforced” because it comprises highperformance thermoplastic fibres in a matrix of exactly the same material. It is 100% polypropylene, but yields stiffness and strength values around 5 times those of regular PP. In addition, Curv has a high strain to failure which in combination with good tensile strength offers tremendously high impact resistance, even at temperatures as low as -189 degrees Celsius. Finally, the material has exceptional abrasion resistance and compressive strength. Application areas are manifold: suitcases, sports equipment, automotive parts (interior and exterior), anti-ballistic products, etc. This self-reinforced material is also used as a skin material in lightweight sandwich structures, usually in combination with thermoplastic core materials. It can be supplied on rolls or as a sheets in thicknesses from 0.35 to 2.95 mm, a maximum product width of 1360 mm and any length, and can be combined with materials like aluminium, glass, aramid and/or carbon fibres, resulting in a totally new range of thermoplastic composites for a wide range of cost and performance targets.
