OLNICA, a French company that specialises in anticounterfeiting solutions for materials protection, has developed a wide range of invisible marking powders to secure materials against counterfeiting in many applications. This new technology allows manufacturers to solve their counterfeiting problems with a simple and robust system. Multiple levels of security are possible with the same marker without changing the production process. Due to their high chemical and thermal resistance, these taggants can be integrated into a wide range of host materials (plasters, concretes, textiles, plastics, inks, adhesives, etc.) with no impact on the material’s characteristics. Armacell is introducing the new family of foam cores, ArmaFORM PET FR, designed for applications that have to meet flame, smoke and toxicity (FST) requirements. These foams are certified according to the FST standards relevant for the train industry: NF F16-101 and DIN 5510. Test results show that important technical characteristics such as mechanical properties and damage tolerance remain at the usual high level. ArmaFORM PET FR offers the best-in-class fire properties in the thermoplastic foam cores market.

At the JEC 2011 Design conference, Chomarat and Stanford University, as part of a developing project mobilizing a team of companies and universities from around the world, introduced a totally new concept of unbalanced thin ply bi-axial non-crimp fabric (NCF) called C-PLY™ BiAngle. Production equipment is now in place to run either carbon or glass NCF with shallow angles as low as 20°. In order to meet the demands of aerospace OEMs, the team is now introducing intermediate-modulus carbon fibre and is able to reach areal ply weights as low as 50 gsm. Associating a shallow angle with anisotropy allows for bending and twisting coupling in the laminate, offering unexplored design possibilities and major weight savings for parts with a preferred load direction. Newly developed materials offer new possibilities: - Carbon-glass thin ply hybrid NCF - Thick-thin carbon hybrid NCF - Thick glass/thin carbon hybrid NCF Spreading of glass fibre is also part of the program with results so far as low as 150 gsm per ply based on 1200 tex glass roving. This new concept relies on three building blocks: shallow angle, anisotropy and thin plies. Depending on the geometry and specific load of the part, any or all three of the building blocks can be introduced into the design, offering unprecedented weight-saving possibilities.

Axel Plastics Research Laboratories is introducing several new internal mould release agents, such as MoldWiz INT-1881, for high-Tg epoxy. The company also plans to unveil new formulations for polyurethane pultrusion and for polyester and hybrid resin systems which incorporate high ATH loadings. MoldWiz INT-1881 is designed for epoxy systems, including those cured with acid/anhydride, imidazole, amine or bisphenol A. The new internal mould release is specifically designed for epoxy systems that have a high glass transition temperature (Tg) and is suitable for all composite processes including pultrusion. Unlike many other products, INT-1881 provides easy release without impacting Tg and cure. Maintaining Tg is especially critical in the communications, electronics and aerospace industries where high temperatures and dynamic stresses are of particular concern. MoldWiz INT-1881 has proven to be of special value in these applications.
