Now, 30 years later, it is one of Europe’s leading academic institutions for postgraduate studies, with one of the largest, most prestigious, doctoral programmes in the world in the fields of History and the Social Sciences. European University Institute The Institute is unique in its European, comparative and interdisciplinary focus, and its research students go on to take up academic posts and leading professional positions throughout Europe and the world. Spanish researchers graduating from the EUI usually find academic positions in the main universities of Spain and Europe. Being in possession of a further degree (e.g. Masters) or having previous postgraduate research experience constitutes an advantage. Candidates must also have a good knowledge of two official EU languages. Mainly English. Linguistic diversity is encouraged, hence French, German, Italian, Spanish are also used I Students Total: 500, age range: 25-30, Gender distribution: 51 % male, 49 % female I Class size 10-20 I Degree background Bachelors or Masters degrees in the Social Sciences, Law and Humanities PROGRAMME description and METHOD of instruction Studies revolve around a four-year structured programme in four disciplines, leading to a doctorate in: • Economics • History & Civilization • Law • Political & Social Sciences. There is also a one-year research Masters programme (LL.M.) in Law. All five programmes start on 1st September and are full-time, from September to June. The doctoral programme aims to develop students’ skills to carry out independent research under the close supervision of experienced scholars recruited from leading European and world institutions. There are taught courses on research methodology and students are required to attend advanced research seminars and international workshops. The second and third years allow for research, fieldwork and data collection and to this end researchers may take advantage of financed research trips abroad. Students may also participate in funded exchange programmes that the EUI has with leading European and U.S. universities (e.g. LSE, EHESS, Paris 1 Sorbonne, Humboldt, NYU, Columbia, Wisconsin, Berkeley, Michigan). I Graduates per year 100 Doctorates, 10 LL.Ms I Faculty OTHER ASPECTS Those students admitted and in receipt of a grant from an EU national grant authority do not need to pay tuition fees. Qualifying students receive a grant for three years, as well as allowances such as travel and health insurance, from their national education department. For Spanish and Latin American students, the national office is the Spanish Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores. The basic monthly stipend for 2006 for Spanish and Latin American students is €1300. All EUI research students are eligible to apply for a fourthyear grant from the EUI itself. • Grant applications: both Spanish and Latin American students will find full details on the web site of the Spanish Ministry at: www.becasmae.es.
