Ocean Racing Magazine - #6 - December 2007 & January 2008 - (Page 3)

EDITORIAL DREAMTIME Welcome to our world, Michel Desjoyeaux could have said, when he finished in Bahia. A victory, which is very fitting as this new issue of OceanRacing appears, as just before the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre, we chose to interview the most honoured of single-handed yachtsmen. A whole world. As there is not just one person involved, but the whole of the Imoca class: the sixty-foot monohulls are at their peak, as we enter a new era, which will last up until the end of the next Vendée Globe at least. From their lofty position, they can gaze down on the end of the cycle for the fabulous Orma multihulls, which will bounce back – of course – but not before 2009. In what way and with what machines? We present the current state of play. Ocean Racing Parc Edonia – BP 16144 35761 – Saint-Grégoire Cedex T. 02 99 23 83 83 F. 02 99 23 83 89 Mail : office@courseaularge.com CourseAuLarge is edited by SARL "Editions Course au Large" Publication and editorial director Pierre Giboire - +33 2 99 23 83 83 pierre.giboire@courseaularge.com The Transat Jacques Vabre, then the Transat B to B, and the Barcelona World Race … in ocean crossings around planet, the large monohulls can be found everywhere. That is why this issue of OceanRacing throws the spotlight on them: a meeting with Desjoyeaux, a look at the ins and outs of routing, a presentation of Foncia, the choice of masts, without forgetting the fabulous story of the couple, Dominique Wavre-Michèle Paret, taking part together in the Barcelona. Then, there is what is going on behind the scenes, as we attempt to analyse the recent decisions taken by the Imoca class, which is now able to act from a strong position. Very strong indeed. With one year to go before the Vendée Globe, OceanRacing had to offer its readers this feature. As these giant monohulls are often the result of the development of their younger sisters, we look back at Yves le Blévec’s great victory in the Transat 6.50, and explain the developments of the Lombard designs. Sticking with monohulls, you can also read an article, where we question the designers of the future Volvo Ocean Race boats. A lot to discuss in the aisles of the Paris Boat Show, which is about to open its doors, which has led us to double the space given over to new racers. That would be quite enough to keep us occupied throughout the long winter evenings, but the end of this year is likely to be marked by the round the world races against the clock. Once again, there is not just one regal candidate. As we go to press, Francis Joyon and Thomas Coville have announced they are about to begin their battle of the giants sailing alone around the planet on board their three-hulled boats. Franck Cammas’s crew is due to set sail in December on the same route. Both solo yachtsman hope to complete the voyage in under 70 days, while the men on Groupama 3 are aiming for less than 48, as the prized crewman Jacques Caraës explains in a portrait drawn up by Serge Messager, a new writer for OceanRacing. No more bets. On board the 60-foot boats and the giant multihulls, on one ocean or around the world via the Capes, in the wild North Atlantic or the Deep South, there is a lot to be excited about, to fear, to get worked up about and to love. Sail your way through our pages bobbing up and down on the waves. In the end, what really counts is the ability to dream. Again and again. Pleasant dreams.
