FASTNET RACE It was no big surprise, but ICAP Leopard, that we presented to you in Ocean Racing last April, grabbed line honours and set a new record in a particularly exciting Fastnet race. With 211 boats forced to retire out of 271 that started, the statistics say it all and tell us a lot about the IMOCA class racers, who sailed this race two-handed. Following a brilliant win in the Calais Round Britain Race at the start of the season, PRB once again came out top in this major classic organised by the RORC, confirming her position as the boat to beat today. Under overcast skies and with a west sou’westerly blowing at around twenty knots, PRB cast off for an informal training session in the Solent, alongside Yann Eliès’s Generali and Roland Jourdain’s Veolia Environnement. One reef and staysail seemed to be the reasonable option, particularly as a lot of short tacks were planned for the afternoon, so there was no desire to have to add ballast… «According to the charts, we ought to have had ten knots or so. It’s not going to be a quiet outing,» exclaimed Vincent Riou, who was kind enough to invite us on board. Indeed, as we approached the westernmost tip of the island, the wind gradually strengthened. Ahead of us, Generali, with her mainsail hoisted had quickly got away from us, but now was forced to accept that it was necessary to reduce the sail too. No point in taking any risks on the eve of the start of a Fastnet that promised to be quite windy, to the extent that the start was even postponed by 25 hours – a decision, which attracted a lot of comments and was not necessarily well understood. The argument put forward by the venerable Royal Ocean Racing Club was to say that in this way, at the height of the gale, the smaller boats would be able to shelter in the many tiny harbours dotted along the south coast of England.
