Ocean Racing Magazine - #5 - October & November 2007 - (Page 3)
EDITORIAL COUPLES,TOGETHER AND APART! The two-handed transatlantic crossing towards the Brazilian sunshine, the round the world race for duos leaving Spain and the duel between the single-handed yachtsmen attempting to break the round the world record…, Two is the dominant number in ocean racing news at the start of the autumn. When they are not sailing in pairs, some sail against each other, like Francis Joyon and Thomas Coville, a former duo from a previous transatlantic race, who will be setting off in a few weeks to try to tackle the round the world record. We have the prospect of a duel to the end. With just about a year to go before the start of the 2008 Vendée Globe, with a line-up that looks like being historic, almost all of the skippers are going to be racing each other this autumn either in the Transat Jacques Vabre between Le Havre and Bahia (Brazil) or the Barcelona World Race, a new two-handed round the world race leaving from Barcelona. Two great line-ups with some exceptional couples, which will probably give us a few basic ideas about the performance capabilities of older boats that have been refitted, in comparison to the monohulls of the latest generation… As for the giant multihulls, we shall know this winter too whether, as her skipper Franck Cammas announced, the giant green trimaran Groupama will grab the amazing 50-day around the world record from Bruno Peyron’s giant orange catamaran. However, in this latest issue of OceanRacing, we offer you some new features too: « Tactics » first of all, with a detailed explanation by Marc Bouët of Team New Zealand’s defeat in the America’s Cup; « In the words of the skipper», where we leave some top skippers speak for themselves, beginning with Russell Coutts, the new member of the BMW-Oracle team… And henceforth, we shall try in each issue to take you on board a racing yacht, which a professional skipper will present in detail. In this current issue, climb aboard the new Jeanneau 32’, skippered by Patrice Carpentier! To finish we are pleased to announce the arrival of some new writers for this issue of OceanRacing: Firstly, Bruno Ménard will be replacing Jocelyn Blériot, although the latter, who has moved to the other side of the Channel, will continue to sign a few articles for us. Then there is Daniel Gilles, who takes us through the creation fifty years ago of the Admiral’s Cup. Finally, Jean-Louis Le Touzet offers us a portrait of Lionel Lemonchois, the winner of the last Rhum and hot favourite for the next Transat Jacques Vabre. As we go to press, the thirtieth Transat 6.50 fleet are making a stopover in Funchal (Madeira) following a first leg sailed at a thundering pace and are celebrating the amazing victory of the Franco-German yachtswoman, Isabelle Joschke, who clearly shows a great deal of talent… Enjoy the read and see you again soon, Pierre Giboire Ocean Racing Parc Edonia – BP 16144 35761 – Saint-Grégoire Cedex T. 02 99 23 83 83 F. 02 99 23 83 89 Mail : office@courseaularge.com CourseAuLarge is edited by SARL "Editions Course au Large" Publication and editorial director Pierre Giboire - +33 2 99 23 83 83 pierre.giboire@courseaularge.com Associated director, in charge of promotion Fabrice Thomazeau - +33 2 99 23 83 81 fabrice.thomazeau@courseaularge.com Editor in chief Pierre Giboire - 02 99 23 83 83 pierre.giboire@courseaularge.com Contributors Texts : Marc Bouët, Jocelyn Blériot, Dominic Bourgeois, Patrice Carpentier, Daniel Charles, Camille Elbeze, Alex Capron, Daniel Gilles, Jean-Louis Le Touzet, Nicolas Raynaud, Thomas Tison, Agathe Armand, Guillaume Verdon redaction@courseaularge.com Contributing photographers Agence DPPI www.dppi.net Gilles Martin-Raget www.martin-raget.com Guilain Grenier www.martin-raget.com Agence OnEdition www.onedition.com Carlo Borlenghi www.carloborlenghi.com Yvan Zedda www.zedda.com Benoît Stichelbaut www.stichelbaut.com Jean-Marie Liot www.jmliot.com Jacques Vapillon www.vapillon.com Franck Socha www.francksocha.com Thierry Martinez www.thmartinez.com Eric Rousseau www.veloximages.com Christophe Favreau http://www.christophefavreau.book.fr/ Daniel Forster www.yachtphoto.com Ivo Rovira www.ivorovira.com Christophe Launay www.sealaunay.com Andrea Francolini www.andreafrancolini.com Graphic layout execution André-Paul Audo - +33 2 99 23 83 88 andrepaul.audo@courseaularge.com Advertising Stéphane Gitton - +33 2 99 23 83 84 stephane.gitton@courseaularge.com Subscriptions www.courseaularge.com Aurélie Feuvrier - +33 2 99 23 83 83 abonnement@courseaularge.com Numéro de commission paritaire : 0704 K 81937 Dépôt légal October 2007 Copyright Reproduction of texts, pictures and illustrations is prohibited, unless a special authorization has been granted by CourseAuLarge.
