PRACTICAL TIPS DIY ROPE WORK How to make a rope shackle You can find more and more modern fibres on the decks, as they gradually replace a number of metal parts. There are weight savings, they look more attractive, and it reduces chafing… There are many advantages, and today we are going to show you how to make two easy pieces. 1. The material to use is coated, braided Spectra. For any rope-making, you will require a set of hollow needles, which is the basic equipment. Made of yellow fibre, the finished product that we are trying to make 2. Form an eye, and mark on it two points – A, level with the index finger and B, level with the thumb. 3. With the help of the hollow needle, we pull the tip of the braided material through through mark A: now we can see the core and the outer braid. 4. The core comes out of the middle of the outer braid, and we close the eye by lining up points A and B. The tip of the core will be used to form the stop knot (see detailed picture).. 5. Fix the core and the outer braid to the base of the stop knot using sewn whipping. 6. Use the natural flexibility of the core to open the eye, that we can then lock into place once the shackle is in place: you then have to ease the outer braid towards the stop knot, and it will pull itself tight… Ocean Racing - april 2007
