Wild Design/Virbac-Paprec/DPPI Contacted by phone, as he was about to embark on the first sea trials on board his new PaprecVirbac, JeanPierre Dick is hiding nothing: the research and building phases were very exciting, but also very tiring. However, let there be no mistake about it, the skipper from Nice is above all bristling with impatience, and from the outset he reminded us: "I took the decision to build this second boat in May 2005, so it will soon be two years, and now it’s time to appreciate the results out on the water." The second Farr design for the Virbac-Paprec team, this new Open 60 stands out with its adjustable tab is rather like those you find on motor boats (see our interview with Patrick Shaughnessy, vicechairman of Farr Yacht Design). "This characteristic means that our hull is not exactly the same as the other Farr designs that have been launched recently, explained Jean-Pierre, but for the time being, we prefer not to give away too many details." That has now become common practice as the young guns in the IMOCA circuit have got into the habit of keeping things ‘Top secret’, which used to be the reserve of the syndicates taking part in the America’s Cup… and we should remember that the Virbac team was moreover one of the first to adopt this stance of being (very) discreet during the development of their first monohull. "The other interesting feature on this boat, continued the skipper, apart from the adjustable tab, is the protection, as we have developed a system of a foldaway hard top, which will allow us to cover almost all of Ocean Racing - april 2007
