REPORT FRENCH SUCCESSIN THE USA! ©W. Cooper/DPPI Erik Maris and his crew on Twins, new Mumm 30 world champions. Apart from our worldrenowned specialists in match racing and light sailing, sometimes, larger yachts flying the red, white and blue do well beyond our borders. In America, this winter, Erik Maris and Stéphane Névé achieved some great results. They deserve to be honoured. Have you ever heard of Erik Maris? Probably not, as he is very discreet and shuns any publicity. With a diploma from the top French HEC School, this sailor from Granville with the body of an athlete rapidly entered the world of high finance. This allows him at the age of forty to indulge his great passion: top level sailing competitions using his own money. After a brief period sailing a Swan 45, Erik heartily encouraged by his friends and family, chose a Farr 40, the one-boat design, which is a favourite of the world elite. For the past three years, he has been circling the globe attending the major meetings in the circuit with his loyal team, including in particular Jean-Sébastien Ponce, Thierry Fouchier and François Brénac… French is spoken on board Twins and there is a French way of doing things, sometimes to the point of excess… as was the case last year, when Erik and his team preferred a different final to taking part in the final of a Farr 40 championship: the World Cup. Apart from his devotion to the Farr 40 circuit, Erik never hesitates to try his hand in other series as an "owner-driver", such as the Mumm 30, which is really a slimmed down Farr 40. He discovered this one-design boat back in 2005 during the world championships in La Trinité-sur-Mer. He enjoyed himself so much that he promised to return the following year for the worlds, which took place this time in December 2006 in Miami, Florida. As Pierre-Loïck Berthet was not available to attend the event to defend his title, the group from Twins saw another reason to take part. Erik Maris: "We hired a U.S. boat out there, (since then he has bought his own for the coming season, Ocean Racing - april 2007
