Of course, both are critical to success, there is a symbiotic relationship (always wanted to get that phrase into an article...) between the two disciplines. Leadership without Management is just a dream, whilst Management without Leadership is just irritating... At the time of writing I'm sat in a hotel room in Glasgow, Scotland having arrived from Birmingham earlier and preparing for an Executive Coaching and Leadership Workshop for one of the top manufacturing companies in the region; so I thought I'd share some the content of my workshop with you as part of this quarter's column. There is not much I can add to the material available regarding Management and Leadership theory - from Deming to Maxwell, Drucker to Peters; the rules, principles and methods have been explored intimately... However... There are so many books on Leadership and Management that one would think that they are both "dark arts" that are only really understood by the elite few that have somehow cracked the code... There are a few principles that tend to be overlooked by the text books, and the majority of workshops, gurus and consultants out there; the principles of the creation of a cult or a gang... On the subject of "Leadership Books", Amazon returns 146,000 results, whilst in the subject of "Management" Amazon returns 1,130,000 results - which suggests that in reality no one has a clue about either of them... Now, this is not to say that every leader or manager should be in the business of creating cults or gangs - simply that there are principles of organising cults and gangs that can be used to great effect... In essence, and in my opinion, leaders determine direction, vision and motivation whilst Managers coordinate the resources, people and agenda such that the vision turned into reality... The greatest leaders in the world - from Churchill to Stalin, Mandela to Lincoln all had a few things in common and whether you like it or not, so did Hitler and Genghis Khan... Simple I know, but in my experience, the two functions are different and require distinct skill sets, personalities and tool kits... So in order to understand effective Leadership and Management we have to understand the psychology of cults and gangs; what makes people pledge allegiance to a person and a cause with such dedication that everything else becomes secondary... - OCT Writing articles and papers is one of the most enjoyable parts of my work, mainly because it allows me to think, research and share ideas and principles that I observe during my work as a Business Coach...
