1.DO GOALS HELP PEOPLE BECOME MORE SUCCESSFUL...? They do and they don't.... There is a popular story in the field of Personal and Professional development that tells how the progress of students at a US university were studied after graduation. The "research" shows that those who had written their goals down achieved a much higher level of success than those who didn't... As with so many of these stories - it's a myth, and it never happened... Another "classic" that most people have heard of is the SMART principle of Goal Setting. You may have had the misfortune of hearing a trainer warble on about how Goals need to be; Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely. The challenge here is with the A and the R - and who decides what is Achievable and Realistic... On the 25th May 1961 when JF Kennedy said: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth..." It certainly didn't pass the SMART test... Nothing of any real significance that has been achieved ever does... Simply put, we have not been educated or trained for high achievement, so the goals we set are sometimes limited in their scope and ambition... 2.WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS...? The current education system is geared around Industrial Age and Capitalist thinking. The structure of education was designed to prepare people for work within an industrial society; essentially to work according to set patterns that suited the production requirements of factories and mills... If we look at any education system it has two main principles... 1.Set Routines - working from "bell to bell" with set breaks, in preparation for the work environment... 2.Mathematics, Languages and Sciences at the top of the curriculum, with Art, Music and Dance at the bottom. So what happens is, we go to school, college and university and become educated in how to behave in a structured, corporate business-like environment.
