Dai ly life A EATING The French eat three times a day. They usually have breakfast when they get up in the morning, and then two proper meals: lunch at about 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and dinner at about 8 p.m. You can choose to eat in a variety of ways. o If you want to do your own cooking, you will find lots of food shops and supermarkets in Rennes and hypermarkets on the outskirts. If you are looking for fresh produce, there are open-air markets which can be found on different days in various parts of the city from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The biggest and best-known is the market that takes place in the Place des Lices every Saturday morning. A list of the days and times of these markets can be found in the 'Vivre à Rennes' (Living in Rennes) guide. o If you want to eat out, you have a vast choice of cafés, brasseries, fast-food outlets, local restaurants, and gourmet restaurants. You can pay €5 for a sandwich, about €15 for a 3-courses meal (starter, main course, and dessert), and a lot more for a meal in a gourmet restaurant. o The university restaurants, commonly called the 'Restos U', offer the cheapest solution for a full and well-balanced meal. These restaurants, run by the CROUS (Centre Régional des Oeuvres Universitaires et Scolaires), are open at lunchtime from Monday to Friday to all members of the academic community. Some are also open in the evening. You can pay for 'Resto U' meals either in cash or with a ticket that you can buy at lunchtime at the restaurants. A full meal (2015-2016 prices) costs a student €3.25. Your host establishment will inform you of the price of meal that you are entitled to, and will also tell you if there is a staff restaurant.
