LYCRA® fibre 50 years of value and partnership Making Fashion History with LYCRA® Fibre Imagine today’s fashion without bikinis, leggings, or superbly fitting hosiery… The dramatic garment progress of the last 50 years is the direct result of technological innovations created in response to new lifestyle demands. Among the most exciting breakthroughs of the last fifty years is the invention of LYCRA® fibre, that has contributed to the exponential growth of new apparel possibilities up to now. Fabric innovations have always inspired the course of fashion history in every sense. There was a time when only the richest could afford to pay attention to fashion until Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and made industrial clothing more accessible to the masses. The crinoline and hoops of the mid nineteenth century gave women a particular look that would never have been in style otherwise, and with the dress reforms that appeared some thirty years later, pantaloons and camisoles came to liberate women from their strict fashion restrictions. The same way that undergarments have changed over time thanks to new inventions and fashion trends, so has the comfort level of garments evolved because of new technology. When LYCRA® fibre, a man-made elastane fibre was born in 1958, it made hosiery and clothing lighter, long lasting and easier to wear. A matchless invention, the LYCRA® fibre is never used alone but always blended with other fibres, and features unique stretch and recovery assets. Comfort was once the opposite of fashionable style, but with that new innovation, garments suddenly became more comfortable, and allowed a better fit, shape retention and freedom of movement. into all garment sectors. By the mid-eighties, LYCRA® fibre was used for the first time in non-support hosiery and millions of women soon discovered the magic of close, comfortable fit. 90’s: Beyond the Realm of Sportswear In the nineties, the standard use of LYCRA® fibre became standard in ready-to-wear apparel. Fashion Photographer Richard Avedon’s “Nothing Moves like LYCRA®” campaign made the fibre more popular than ever. Men’s fashion began using it increasingly. New fibres from the brand promised extra comfort and durability for garments. The n e w m i l l e n n i u m welcomed dozens of new LYCRA® fibre specialty innovations, making LYCRA® fibre an essential component for fashion everywhere. 1958: A Code Named K There was a time when rubber used to provide the stretching and elastic quality in corsetry and garments. In 1958, Joe Shiver, a DuPont scientist created a revolutionary new fibre, code named K, that changed the saggy, baggy, stretched and bunched clothing into garments that would better suit consumers needs. LYCRA® fibre was born and would change fabric usage forever. A Step Forward with Koch Industries In 2004, Koch Industries, one of the largest private companies in the world acquired INVISTA from Du Pont de Nemours and now owns all of the LYCRA® fibre Portfolio. A strong management with a strong commitment to innovation is bound to take INVISTA to new heights. LYCRA® fibre at the 1968 Winter Olympic Games LYCRA® fibre revolutionized the clothing industry by changing the way fabrics could be used. Beachwear took a giant leap forward into progress. The new fibre produced quick-drying garments that replaced thick and heavy swimsuits. It was the sports sector that brought LYCRA® fibre to public attention when the 1968 French Olympic ski team became the first group of high-profile personalities to wear ski suits with LYCRA® fibre. 70’s - 80’s: The Fitness Fever Leggings and body-hugging jeans made their grand entrance onto the fashion scene. Jane Fonda’s famous leg warmers, and in-style LYCRA® fibre leotards came out as the fibre spread out 2
