Courtaulds Goes For The Ultimate!
Jane Gwyther is Legwear Product and Technical Director of Courtaulds Legwear, which has been involved in hosiery production since 1919. Responsible for a number of technical firsts and innovation, their two most famous brands are Pretty Polly and Aristoc.
PS: Could you tell us how your partnership with LYCRA® fibre was born and how it developed over time? JG: Courtaulds (UK) Ltd has been working with LYCRA® fibre from the beginning, we own the two biggest hosiery brands in the UK, Pretty Polly and Aristoc and we were the first to introduce hosiery with LYCRA® fibre in the UK, back in the 1980’s. Innovation is at the forefront of our strategy and we pride ourselves at offering consumer-led products into the market. These have often over the years incorporated LYCRA® fibre as one of the key yarns. PS: What does working with INVISTA and the LYCRA® fibre brand bring to Courtaulds? JG: We work hard to ensure our products are the best in class and value for money we can make them. We know that LYCRA® fibre offers the consumer a quality standard that she can trust, and this compliments our products. PS: What values does your company share with INVISTA? JG: Innovation, quality, first to market, consumer-led. PS: What was your customers’ preliminary reaction when you first presented your LYCRA® Fusion fibre samples? JG: We are delighted with the initial reaction we have had to our Aristoc Ultimate range, not only do we have three different leg looks, 5 denier sheer, 10 denier matt and 10 denier shine, all using LYCRA® Fusion fibre , but we have a great new look to our Aristoc Brand which is showcased in this new product launch. We are proud of our British heritage and our new look pack clearly supports our ‘made in England’ products. Aristoc has always delivered great quality products to the consumer which help her look great, and give her confidence. We have a very strong body toners range and we now have a great premium sheer range too. PS: What other LYCRA® fibre innovations did you launch under Pretty Polly or Aristoc brand … JG: We have had a great many product launches throughout our history and will continue to work closely with INVISTA and LYCRA® fibre to deliver innovation to the market. PS: What is Courtaulds’ position on the hosiery market today? JG: We are the biggest hosiery supplier to the UK high street. We are the only hosiery brand that invests in advertising and PR activity in the UK market, helping to drive the category. We have had a very successful Autumn 09 campaign, which we will continue into this autumn. We have a strong British heritage, and we have been pushing the boundaries of product and innovation in the last 12 months. PS: How would you describe the current state of the hosiery market? JG: Overall the market is still in decline year on year, but we are now seeing volume in decline too; the older consumer is becoming more casual in her dressing particularly as she reaches retirement, and she therefore is buying less. However there are pockets in the market that are really strong. Opaques are still in demand and now sold almost all year round, and we have also seen the younger consumer +15 become much more interested in hosiery as a fashion accessory (often wearing for the first time) and this has been really strong for our Pretty Polly Brand, particularly with our collaboration with the House of Holland label. PS: Any prediction on its evolution? JG: I believe that the hosiery industry will see a greater emphasis on the accessory area over the next few years, with more space being given to colour and design rather than multipacks and shaping. PS: What are the upcoming trends in the hosiery sector? JG: More opaques, more colours. More fashion. We are seeing a return to sheers too, which is why we have launched Aristoc Ultimate.
