Expo The unique Unveiled last June, the City of Lace in Calais, in the north west of France, is the place anyone working in the lingerie business oughtto visit. T give you a hint o of what you will see, The Best of Intima takes you through a first tour even if, as you will see, a personal experience of the event is worth the trip. A maserpiece in itself Designed by the architectural studio Moatti and Rivière, the façade of the International City of Lace arouses curiosity From the canal, it masks the old tulle mill and completes it with double glass frontage, one concave, the other convex of which the undulating movement evokes femininity. Their fine screenprinting in metallic overglaze replicates the perforations in the Jacquard cards used on the English Leavers looms. In daylight, the light of the Calais sky is reflected on the glass undulation; in darkness, the patterns are lit up from the inside and imprint a flickering lace pattern in the sky . Inside the vast building, the permanent exhibition is organized into five stages relating the history , the current state and the future of lace and fashion. The visit trail is a paced composition, just like a story where each presentation sequence is borne by its own original device to reveal the many facets of the history of lace. Let’s follow the guide… aceexperience Hand-made lace The first lace pieces to be offered for the visitor’s perusal bedeck the voluptuous garden, the theatre for the game of appearances and social codes in the classic period. The fine and delicate arabesques of the lace are projected onto the surface of the ground like a carpet of shadow and light. This first presentation sequence is devoted to the history of hand-made lace from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Using the European journey as a medium, the chronological trail evokes the significant stages “You don’t just visit the International City of Lace and Fashion, you come and live an experience, discovering and testing the exceptional skills behind the extraordinary fabric which is lace”
