"We're a service business,
what we are selling is an experience"
customer experience. We bought a new
fleet of trains, we invested a lot in our
stations and in our digital capability,
so suddenly the merge unleashed a lot
of potential for the business and we've
been growing business since then and
we've been profitable since 2010.
What industry is Eurostar in?
We're a service business, what we are
selling is an experience. Essentially
we want people to feel that they're
on holidays or that they start their
trip from the moment they get on the
Eurostar. That's the ambition. So they
have a great experience even before
they've arrived to their destination. So
that's at the heart of what we do. Our
staff is extremely important too and
we train people, we coach them. We
are very lucky to have people who are
very proud to work for the Eurostar.
When the customer comes, we want
him to have good memories. It's great
to see people taking pictures from the
platform, in front of the train, with
the staff and enjoying themselves on
board.

Customer experience was one
of the main improvements
of your presidency?
Yes, it's the heart of our strateg y,
because we have to differentiate
ourselves from the low-cost airlines,
which are really efficient. And from
the other flagship carriers who are also
improving all the time. Transport is
a really competitive industry. So we
have to offer customers a fantastic
experience from the start. That's really
where we differentiate ourselves and
that's why we are so successful.
What about the competition
from the airlines?
It's very competitive with the airlines
at the moment. I mean there's never
been so much choice in Europe to
travel but that's why we're investing
in our product and in our customer
experience. That's why our customers
prefer to travel with us and we're very
pleased with the result. What we see
is that more and more people prefer
to take the high-speed train rather
than fly, because they appreciate the

comfort and they appreciate the fact
that even if it's a longer journey time
thanks to the Internet, and the smartphones actually people don't mind too
much taking a train for 3 of 4 hours
whereas before they preferred to
take a plane. But now people are very
relaxed because they're on the train
they can do what they want. Even for
our business passengers. We can see
that up to 3 even 3 and a half hour,
many of them take the train because
they can work on board. Regarding
leisure passengers it can be a lot more
than that. For instance we launched
a couple of years ago a new road
from London to Lyon, Avignon and
Marseille and we were really surprised
by the success of Marseille, which is 6
and a half hour journey time, but it's
full. People are on board with their
family; their friends and they enjoy the
whole journey. It's interesting how the
market is changing.
Which challenges is
Eurostar facing today?
Next year we will launch a new service to Holland. We will go directly
from London to A msterdam and
Rotterdam. For us and for everybody,
it's a historical moment because we
will link for the fi rst time the capital
