I reach Agadir having
seen more of Sahara
than ever expected.

Experience something new and adventurous
At the end of the lake the stones begin again and
my feet are burning although I took some more
pain relievers at lunchtime.
No other way than forward, when 30 kms before Foum Zguit I heard an at least 50 years old
Mercedes truck approach from behind. While I
am still wondering what Moroccans are doing
with this vehicle in the desert I see the license
plate: Hamburg. I start laughing and have a chat
with them. They are four, drove all the way from
Hamburg and are on a desert round trip, trying to
make it all the way to West Sahara, known here
just as «South Morocco».
It took me a while, but taking it as a hint to meet
them here I join them for the last kilometers and
climb on board. How lucky am I? The next morning
I am not able to move a single step. Skin is coming
of my feet leaving raw flesh. No running today! I
have no other chance than to give my feet a rest. I
decide to join them for some time.
While being sad of not sticking to the plan to run
the whole way, I thought about my initial idea to
start that trip. I wanted to experience something
new and adventurous. And this is exactly what

happens now. I don’t know where I am heading,
how far we are going and am completely out of
control of my journey. Time to let my thoughts go.
I take down a note to remember that. Always ask
yourself what the original goal was to create this
plan when obstacles occur.
Seeing these four people being so independent of
everything that is so important to others peoples
vacation: hotels, towns and even roads is special.
Having two mechanics on board they are able to
repair everything they have with them. They have
enough food and water supply with them to stay
off road for whole 8 days. We follow the whole
riverbed of Draa all the way to the Atlantic Ocean
over the next days. Unbelievable to see the mighty
dunes reach all the way to the waterfront.
Don’t surround yourself with too many things you
can’t handle yourself, I say to myself. As my feet
get better after days I start running beside the truck
from time to time. On our way back north along the
Atlantic shore I leave my new friends in Sidi Ifni and
walk towards Agadir on my own again.
Now I see desert on my right and ocean on my
left. I sleep at the beach in little bays and am finally
using my tent because of the wet air.
April 25th I reach Agadir having completed 250 kms
by foot and having seen more of Sahara than ever
expected. Then I head back home to Berlin on the
29th. It feels like I have been away for ever. First
thing to do when back home: I throw much of my
stuff away that I found at home. Since that day I
keep throwing away everything that is not something I really need. I want to remain some of the
easiness I had when travelling. I don’t want to be
bound by things anymore.
After adjusting to «normal city life» again, I wrote
down many of the unexpected learnings and found
new inspiration for my ESCP Europe workshops
where I am going to integrate them. And still missing
the independence of travelling where my feets carry
me I am going to run a 400 kms around Berlin trip
in late August. Anyhow, I do it because I love it. ●
