chatting to people who somehow arrive at the oasis to make pictures. It comes to my mind that they
came out of a town in the morning and will be back
in one in the evening. Whereas I have absolutely no
idea where I will be in the evening.
The Moroccans still tell me there is no way to make
it to Foum Zguit but two Germans on motorbikes
that I meet give me some hints and trust in my journey. So I head of for another day. By now my feet
are killing me athough I can’t see any blisters yet.
While walking my way gets rockier and rockier. I
need to watch every step and have to watch my
feet while my backpack is now heavily laden with
over 30 kg. Crossing a dried up river bed leaves
me completely exhausted under the only bush I
could find waiting for the heat to cool of a little.
By sunset I put my belongings in a little dip and
prepare for the night. My tent stays where it was
all day.
Next morning I try to start early because I plan to
do a long rest in the middle of the day to stay out
of the heat as much as possible. I also think it might
be a good idea to give my feet as much rest as I
can. Other than expected they are not getting any
better at all.
I now follow the former northern coast of the giant
dried up lake Iriki. I pass little oasis’ with dried up
dwells on my way. I also see two donkeys. And almost every two hours I can spot camels somewhere. Somehow there seem to be people living here.
While getting some rest under a solo tree around
noon, three nomad kids show up for a little chat
(they in Arabic I in french) listening to some music,
making some pictures and then heading for something to dig for in the desert. I have no idea…
The rest of my day consists out of heat, sand and
stones. And… another miraculous oasis which
I did not expect to find. No people around. The
inhabitants resting and no tourists anywhere near
gave me some time at the dwell. Fill up my water
and take a rest in the shade with fresh water on my
overheated head. By the way, fresh water means,
a taste of algae mixed with an odour of frog. All of
that at approximately 30 degrees. Wonderful.
When I found my place to stay for the night (some
little dunes with bushes) I prepared my dinner.
Immediately a sandstorm came by to say good
night which left me chewing on sand for the whole
night.
Big mistake…
Then, another early wake up in the morning. I plan
to run as close as possible to Foum Zguit today
because I don’t know how much longer my feet
can make it. Between 7am and 8am I come through
a little village out of a few houses. As soon as it
looks like civilization people are trying to sell me
stuff so I try to pass this place as fast as possible,
only seeing one person with his goats leaving the
village.

Wandering in the wrong
direction...

Big mistake
I should have taken a left turn in the village and
started to cross the lake. But I didn’t. I kept walking
the imaginary coast line and am now wandering
in the wrong direction. Which I don’t know at the
moment. Having passed the village hours ago the
tracks that I was following disappear into nowhere.
I’m lost. And I am only walking with pain killers.
Since I have absolutely no idea where to go, I climb
up the near mountain range in order to get a better
overview. It looks wonderful but doesnt’t help. After
descending on the other side I find some tracks
which lead directly onto the lake.
Well those tracks have to lead somewhere. So
I give it a try and follow the tracks. Short before
noon I actually meet a person with 15 camels and
he can assure me that I am on the right track again.
Finally. I walk for another hour and then get some
rest under a tree. Soon camels approach, followed
by another teenage guart half an hour later. He explains me (in Arabic) that I have to go on the lake
and follow the piles of dust which mark the route
over the lake. Asking for my way seems to work
much better than any map of this region.
After lunchbreak I do as told and walk over the lake.
What shall I say. It is so much easier yet hotter than
anything else I walked on in the these days.
I make it across the lake within hours and start
realizing that I lost five hours and at least 25 kms
when I got lost.
