Bringing energy
and environment
together
The UK-based ESCP Europe Alumni Energy and Environment Group wanted to
live up to its name and answer the question “How do you generate energy in an
environmentally friendly way? Better yet, how can the environment help make
energy generation more efficient?”.
innovations are rarely noticed by the general public. Land Securities, One New Change’s developer, chose to install 60km of pipework -enough to
wrap around the London Eye 140 times- to warm
and cool the building by transferring heat efficiently
to and from the ground itself. Heat pumps, at the
core of the system, make the most of aquifers underneath the building, to turn 1 joule of electrical
energy into 3 joules of heat.
After a stimulating presentation and a welcomed
«heat pumps for dummies» session, our group
toured the basement to see the impressive system
in action. Up a few floors there was also a chance
to enjoy London’s best kept secret: the amazing
rooftop view! We finished the evening by networking over drinks.
We would like to thank all participants for their
great contributions, questions, conversation and
feedback, and One New Change for hosting this
fascinating evening.

The Jean Nouvel-designed leisure and entertainment centre, One New Change, in the heart of the
City, provided a great setting for both our second
event and this important discussion. Fifteen ESCP
Europe alumni and guests from the energy, environment and real estate sectors, gathered on the
17th June 2013 for an exclusive presentation and
tour of Europe’s largest renewable energy system:
the geothermal installation that heats and cools
One New Change’s 60 shops and restaurants
which span 550,000 sq ft over eight floors.
Spurred on by the City of London’s requirement for
10% of energy production to come from renewable
sources, clean technology innovation is at work in
new commercial buildings; however, most of these
