Get involved!

Clarence NAHAN has been working for the past 4 years in Investment
Banking at Nomura International in London. He is one of the 3
delegates for the ESCP Europe Alumni Finance Group based in the UK.

How did you get involved as a
delegate for the ESCP Europe
Alumni Association?
To be honest, it really began as an
open discussion with some of the
School’s representatives at the
beginning of the year. One of the
key motivations I had was to get
more hands-on into the day-to-day
activity of the Alumni Association. I
have always been very grateful for
the opportunities offered to me by
ESCP Europe and, as a relatively
recent graduate, I thought it was
the perfect way to start giving back
some of my energy and my time to
the network.
Could you tell us a little bit
more about the Finance Group?
The ESCP Europe Alumni Finance Group, with its
7 275 members, is today the largest professional
group of the association. It also maybe one of the
most international, with alumni spreading between
New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong
and Tokyo. It was therefore an amazing opportunity but also a huge responsibility to be appointed
as one of only, 7 delegates for the Group.
Why is this Group so key for the School and
within the Alumni community?
The School’s profile and international status has
dramatically improved over the past decade and
this has benefited to everyone, including to the
Alumni. Our top-3 ranking in the FT annual review
is maybe the best example of how awareness has
been raised around ESCP Europe. Given some
of the criteria used in this ranking, such as career
progression, salary and international experience,
the financial sector is a natural area to nurture if
we want to maintain the School in the lead.
How do you see your role within this
Group?
Being based in London, together with
Laurent LECLERQ (MSF 98) and Sebastian

STEINHAUSER (09), our natural focus is to
animate the UK-based finance alumni community.
Our members have a very specific profile, often
in their 30s-40s, always on a lookout for new
professional opportunities and with a very good
understanding of the virtues of networking. One
of our first objectives was therefore to make sure
that everyone had a very good access of the
breadth of the ESCP Europe footprint in London
and learn how to leverage it, to share advice, tips,
and opportunities or just to have a good time.
What were the first challenges you
encountered?
One of the main challenges for us was first of
all to bring these alumni together. There are as
many jobs in Finance in London as there are days
in the year, and with various profiles ranging from
Investment Banking to Asset Management, Retail
or Private Banking, we needed to make sure we
could reach the 500+ Alumni that are currently
employed in the City. The Alumni website and the
social media helped of course, but our network
is still growing little by little through events and
word-to-mouth, welcoming new alumni who
wanted to get involved.
What is the most emblematic event you
organized in 2012?
The «Banking round table with Alumni» organized
in September was maybe one of the key milestones for the Group in the UK. We managed to
bring together a panel of 7 different speakers,
all recent graduates and all currently employed
in the financial sector in London, to share their
experience and their advice with MiM and MEB
students only just arrived on the London campus
for the beginning of their academic year. This
was the one session for them to get answers to
all the questions they had always wanted to ask,
in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The event
actually received a lot of attention from the Alumni
community and even received the «Best Student
Event» Delegate Award at the Autumn Convention
last November.
