As Senior Manager Accenture, Sylvain MELLANGER tells how Accenture helps its clients to achieve high performance in an international environment.
Tell us more about your group and your responsabilities... We are now 246 000 Accenture people (5 000 in France) serving clients in over 120 countries. The international dimension of our teams gives us the critical mass to deliver major global transformational projects, and our solid local anchorage in countries allows us to provide suited expertise to our clients. My current assignment (for a major player in construction and infrastructures industry) consists in achieving high performance and standardized processes across the globe, with a worldwide ERP system. We designed the Core Model with French consultants, and the roll-out in 12 countries is managed by teams mixing French and local country consultants for their legal and local expertise. You’re opting for multicultural and multidisciplinary teams : why? We have -like other consulting firms- experts specialized in industries or in business areas such as strategy, finance, supply chain, etc., but our distinctive strength is we also have teams of dedicated experts in project implementation (IT, Change management, BPO) that will turn the client’s strategy into a concrete reality. Our Consulting expertise is continuously enriched by the feedback from implementation teams. A large proportion of the projects we manage with clients are international or global, so we are used to working daily in teams involving several cultures and nationalities.

Is the current economic context impacting recruitment, and the nature of work performed by Consultants? Very dynamic, our SI business is providing today a lot of recruitment opportunities for young graduates as well as experienced professionals, but our Management Consulting practice is hiring too. Of course in the current context, many new projects are directed to cost savings or short term benefits, but our clients are still launching longer term projects to build the future.

What careers do you offer to young graduates? Like in most Consulting firms, our career model leans on eligibility to promotions every 2 or 3 years, from “Analyst” to “Partner”. Our whole performance process is built on the concept of “developing people”, not only with promotions, but also by expanding their expertise. At Accenture, we do not have back office teams, and new joiners are immediately assigned to a project and put in contact with consultants and clients, under the supervision of a senior consultant.

What is it that makes Accenture so special compared to other Consulting firms? We are not only accompanying clients in the definition of their strategy and in the shaping of their transformation initiatives, but we are also actually managing transformation projects themselves until final implementation.

What about the ESCP Europe community at Accenture? We are about 100 ESCP alumni working for Accenture Paris office, including 6 Partners. ¾ of us belong to Management Consulting and ¼ to Systems Integration. The ESCP Europe Alumni association has established us this year as a new “Corporate Group”. ●
