ombardier Transportation as part of the railway equipment industry and effects of the financial crisis: two topics explained by Sebastian. Serving a diversified customer base around the world, Bombardier Transportation is a global leader in the rail equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. Its wide range of products includes passenger rail vehicles such as metro cars, light rail vehicles/trams, single and double-deck multiple units and high speed trains as well as total transit systems. It also manufactures locomotives, bogies, propulsion & controls and provides rail control solutions.

Why to work in an international company?
Bombardier Transportation entered the mass transit market in 1974 with a first contract for the Montréal metro. It subsequently embarked on a dynamic growth strategy, which combines internally generated expansion with a focus on acquisitions of other companies that have proven designs, know-how and technologies. In 2001, Bombardier acquired Adtranz and integrated it successfully to become a major player on the market.

It’s a truly international company with strong local roots. Bombardier Transportation has its headquarters in Berlin, Germany while present in over 60 countries, with 33,000 employees worldwide. It generates annual revenues in excess of US$ 10 billion. Today, more than 100,000 of its vehicles are in operation worldwide. The accessible worldwide railway equipment market represented a volume of 37 Beur in 2009. Sustainable and environmentally friendly, rail plays an unrivalled role in tackling the challenges posed by climate change, urbanization and population growth. However, overall economic uncertainty and the decline in freight traffic decreased activity in the freight locomotive and service segments. Though economic activity is recovering, uncertainty continues to affect some segments of the rail industry. The industry has observed a decline in trade volumes, particularly affecting the overall freight locomotive market. However, rolling stock products segments such as light rail vehicles and high speed trains have grown.

How to defend the sustainable transportation?

Despite the economic and political environment with the short-term challenges, it is the right time for investing in sustainable transportation that will foster more efficient economic growth in the future. Rail transportation is an economic and environmentally-conscious transportation mode enabling sustainable mobility within and between cities. Rail transportation is energy efficient and flexible, emission-friendly, land-use efficient, reliable and fast, making it increasingly competitive for passenger and freight transportation. Citizens and policy-makers have acknowledged the benefits of rail transportation, as reflected by the steady increase in order activity.

How to face the financial crisis?

Looking at the impact of the financial crisis, many of the publicly tendered projects are planned by large, well-financed public operators, thus their realization depends on a sustained level of public-sector spending.
