RAIRES FOCUS ZOOM ENTREPRENEURS VOYAGES PUBLICATIONS seven years old, they would probably say it differently – yes, they know very well what's « negotiable » with me and where the limits are. Being open toward others while at the same time taking up a definite position are the essentials of human interaction as far as I'm concerned. It applies both at work and in private life. Personal data Evelyne FREITAG completed her business studies at the École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris in 1989. After several traineeships in Germany and France, she started her career in 1989 as a controller with Kraft Jacobs Suchard in France. This was followed by various roles with project and line responsibilities within the Daimler Group. Among other tasks, she worked from Switzerland on the European launch of the SMART automobile and mobility concept. Following a position as Chief Financial Officer and General Manager of the sporting goods manufacturer Pentland Deutschland GmbH, Evelyne FREITAG was appointed Vice President Finance & Supply Chain, Pfizer Germany in 2002. In that position, she is responsible among other things for Planning & Analysis, Finance and Accounting, Procurement and Supply Chain Management for the pharmaceutical human and animal business. The mother of two children is interested in sports, piano, modern art and literature. What are your other personal characteristics? Analytical thinking is certainly one of my strong points. It comes with the job. I have also developed my social skills over the years. It's important, because in my position you have to be able to involve people emotionally and raise their enthusiasm for an idea. That way, my employees generate successes for themselves, for our team, and for the whole organization. So I have to be able to share the passion I have for my work with my employees. I have to infect them with my enthusiasm for a thing. I think I succeed pretty well in doing that. What do you think is so interesting about the pharmaceutical industry? Pharma is exciting! If you look at the age pyramid, it's easy to see that our healthcare system in its present form will be unable to bear the financial strain in the long run. Society has to seek ways to deliver optimum care to our coming generations – both from a medical and financial perspective. Finding a way to develop alternative and modern treatment options that will still be affordable is one of the most exciting issues. At Pfizer, we contribute by delivering innovative drugs and new all-round care concepts. Cue input. What advice would you give to young talents striving for a career in management? Don't plan your career too precisely. Seize opportunities as they arise and accept new challenges. Expand your horizons by gaining experience in a variety of industries or organizations. Build up your networks. And don't forget: there are many ways of doing things. What's important to achieve success is the passion that you put into a thing. So do what your heart dictates! At a glance: Pfizer in Germany The name of Pfizer has stood for the research, development and manufacture of modern pharmaceutical products for more than 150 years. Some 10,000 scientists at Pfizer labs work on the development of innovative new drugs to treat cancer, pain and HIV/AIDS. The organization generated global sales of approximately $48.4 billion in 2006, thereof $1.6 billion in Germany. If you could choose to do somebody else's job – say for a single day – which one would you choose? I already have another job on the side: managing a small four-man family organization. It's fun and gives me strength, but also calls for organizational talent and time management skills. If I were to try to unite these two roles, managing a university or charitable organization would come close. I would commit myself to social issues. Among other things, the task would include an even higher level of networking with the industry and further international allian- Like you? Exactly. My heart beats for Pfizer and its healthcare policy issues. And 2008 will be another extremely interesting year. Our German headquarter is moving from Karlsruhe to Berlin. We want to give patients quicker and safer access to our medicines. We will increase our cooperation with healthcare partners and politicians to the benefit of patients. I'm really looking forward to these new challenges. G ESCP-EAP mag n°117…mars 2008 PHARMACIE Another aspect -one that's not necessarily to do with the industry, but certainly does have something to do with Pfizer as a company- is the interesting people I get to work with. As you might imagine, heading the financial accounting responsibility in Germany as a Frenchwoman via shared services in Ireland, India and Rumania with headquarters in New York is a task that brings new challenges every day. Overcoming those challenges is possible only because of colleagues sharing my pleasure in shaping innovative processes and making things happen as a team in a global environment. ces. To me, shaping the future and seeing every change in your own environment as an opportunity is the most exciting thing there is! And that's an area where I could provide useful input because of my prior work and life experience. & SANTÉ
