Fighting Malaria
and Producing Content:
Malaria No More
MNM transcends the role of an
NGO - it is also a content producer.
By Juan romero
Malaria Sucks. It's safe to say that is a
universal sentiment and it is also the
name of a very successful public
service campaign from the nongovernmental organization (NGO),
Malaria No More. Established in 2006,
Malaria No More (MNM) has dedicated
its efforts to eradicate the mosquitoborne infectious disease that claims
over 600,000 lives a year, devastates
economies and stifles education. MNM
will be a first-time participant at
DISCOP Africa 2014 to promote its
award wining campaign, NightWatch. At
a glance the partnership may seem odd
154
but a quick YouTube search of MNM will
turnout dozens of well produced PSAs
with Hollywood and international
celebrity endorsements that rival
private sector TV-commercials.
MNM's roots are grounded in the media
industry as its co-founder and current
Chairman of the Board, Peter Chernin,
was most recently the President and
Chief Operating Officer of News
Corporation. The understanding of
current culture, successful media
communication and information
dissemination is evident in the
organization's engagement practices.
With public-service campaigns that
integrate terrestrial radio, television,
social media and on the field
groundwork, MNM resembles a modern
multimedia organization. A combination
of well executed branding, media
campaigns and Chernin's contacts have
propelled the NGO as one of the globes
better recognized non-profits. Even if
you're not familiar with the efforts of
MNM chances are you know the name.
This type branding and outreach efforts
have attracted partnerships and
support from organizations like the
Clinton Foundation, The Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation, Time
Warner, HBO among dozens of other
prominent organizations.
We interviewed MNM CEO, Martin
Edlund to learn more about how MNM
is approaching media in Africa.
