An inside look at four specialist spas
Sha Wellness Clinic
Location: Villa de Altea, Spain Size: 1,300m2 (13,993ft2) On offer: Specialized units (healthy aging, aesthetic medicine, sleep recovery, anti-tobacco), macrobiotic cuisine, Life Learning Center (yoga, tai chi, chi kung, laughter therapy), oxygen bar, acupuncture, acupressure Treatments: Massage, beauty treatments, hydrotherapy Brand used: Sodashi, La Ric, John Masters Organics Why it’s different: Sha Wellness Clinic was one of the first spas to take the wellness trend to a new level. The clinic offers healing therapies from Asian techniques and Western medicine, and has licensed doctors on staff. Sha is structured more like a clinic than a spa, with “units” devoted to specific health issues. The sleep recovery unit uses diagnostic tools such as polisomnographics (sleep pattern tracking), and offers therapies like acupuncture. Other units are dedicated to aesthetic medicine, anti-tobacco and psychology. Guests are put on a macrobiotic diet during their stay and have access to treatments such as shiatsu, tai-chi, laughter therapy and reflexology, depending on their program. Despite this medical approach, the spa has all the trappings of a luxury pampering experience. There are 16 treatment rooms and the wet zone features water-based treatments including hydro-massage beds and floating pool, as well as massage and beauty treatments. Sha has been under Bangkok-based Spatality management since December 2010.
Blythswood Square Spa
Location: Glasgow, Scotland Size: 10,000ft2 (929m2) On offer: Indigenous treatments using local ingredients Treatments: Facials, massage, seaweed bath Brands used: Anne Sémonin, ila Why it’s different: Blythswood Square claims that it is Glasgow’s first luxury spa to use indigenous organic natural ingredients. Opened in September 2010, the hotel spa’s treatment menu makes use of local ingredients, such as organic milk thistle, seaweed sourced from the Hebrides coast and sea lavender. Signature treatments are based on the concept of Turus (Gaelic for journey); the Turus Body Wrap includes a full-body seaweed and salt scrub topped off with a seaweed and plasma plankton mud wrap. There are two services just for men including the ila Vital Energy Full Body Massage with Scottish herb poultices. Two treatments focus on motherhood: ila Mother to Be offers lymphatic massage and ila Mother, a post-partum treatment, comprises a jasmine, sandalwood and rose scrub and massage. Facials, some of which target specific areas such as eyes and lips, use skincare brand Anne Sémonin. The Thermal Experience treats guests to seven stages of alternating temperatures. The spa has nine treatment rooms and features a Seaweed Bath and Dark Pool, where guests can wallow in warm waters.
