C U L T I VA R SEED SECTEUR SEMENCIER RÉPUBLIQUE TCHÈQUE L’association des semenciers tchèques (CMSSA) accueille cette année à Prague le congrès international 2008 de l’ISF. Ce Congrès donne à la CMSSA l’occasion de présenter à Cultivar Seed l’industrie semencière de son pays. La République tchèque : un petit pays libéral Usti nad Laben Prague Plzen Ceské Budejovice Hradec Kalove République tchèque L a République tchèque poursuit sa tradition de sélection végétale initiée, au début du siècle dernier, par les premières sociétés de sélection travaillant sous l’autorité de spécialistes agricoles tchèques de renommée mondiale. Des milliers de variétés, qui ont permis un réel progrès dans la production végétale, ont été mises au point et déposées pendant presque un siècle en Tchécoslovaquie (devenue ensuite la République fédérale tchèque et slovaque) et dans bien d’autres pays. Après 1948, le développement du secteur semencier a abouti à la création de deux grandes sociétés d’État, spécialisées dans l’amélioration Ostrava Bmo des plantes et la production de semences : Oseva pour les grandes cultures et Sempra pour l’horticulture. Ces deux entreprises ont poursuivi les programmes sur lesquels les sociétés privées avaient travaillé avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. This gives CMSSA the opportunity to present the seed industry of this country in Cultivar Seed. Contemporary Czech breeding continues in a tradition of breeding activities by its predecessor breeding companies, inaugurated at the beginning of the last century under the guidance of prominent Czech agricultural specialists. Thousands of varieties which have helped in improving plant production have been developed and registered in Czechoslovakia (later the Czech and Slovak Republics) and in many other countries for almost a hundred years. The seed sector development after 1948 lead to establishment of two big State plant breeding and seed production enterprises – « Oseva » in field crops and « Sempra » in horticultural crops. They both con- tinued in programmes of previous private companies having been active before World War II : due to a relatively high financial support from the government, they developed a range of research and breeding programmes and created many varieties. Those varieties have been used widely at a national level and some of them were successful in the international market, too. After 1990, both companies had been divided into several smaller private enterprises and beside that, several new seed trade companies were established. Nowadays there are about 600 registered enterprises that are allowed to breed and sell in the seed market. They differ in size, range of crops and range of activity. Beside plant breeding and seed companies there are several research institutes, some of those are also private. There is no special obstacle for the acquisition of companies by companies based in other countries and therefore they are more active in the Czech Republic than in other countries of the region. Open countries With regards to variety listing, the Czech Republic is a very open and liberal country. There is a keen competition on the market : the market share of domestic companies has a long term falling tendency namely after our accession to the EU countries.
